Langfuse is an open-source AI engineering platform for tracing, evaluating and iterating on LLM applications. The core is MIT licensed and can be self-hosted in full, and in 2025 features including managed LLM-as-a-judge and annotation queues were moved into the MIT core. ClickHouse acquired Langfuse in January 2026 and has publicly committed to keeping the MIT licence and first-class self-hosting.
The difference is surface and licence. Langfuse observes what happens inside the LLM application and can be run entirely on your own infrastructure. Owl is commercial software that observes the user journey around the agent. If an open licence and full self-hosting are hard requirements, Langfuse is the better fit.
